Music Video Editing Process

Throughout the editing the editing process we found many effects that we had never used before and we also developed on the ones that we had used in our AS preliminary task and Thriller opening. since then I do feel like my skills using iMovie have developed a lot and I now have a better understanding of the most effective shots and cuts to use and the most effective times to use them. I have also learned about the conventions of a music video and typical effects, cuts and transitions which are used.

One of the many effects we used was layering one piece of footage on top of another. this created a interesting effect for example we could have person singing as a close up and then another clip of the whole group dancing with the flashing artificial lights. Or for example in the clip in this image it is the group dancing overlapped by one person dancing. It can also over lap more then more clip and continue on the next as it shows in this image.

This few pictures show how were able to change the speed of different clips we could slow the down or speed them up we could change how much we slowed something down or speeded something up by different percentages. This gave a different perspective on a clip and could dramatically change the clip all together for example when looking at the bottom right image this is at the start of the video and it was a 20 second clip but we speed it up 20x and it made it really quick and then we over lapped it on the beginning clip and it gave a fast pace clip which was perfect for the beginning.

The icon on this cli how that we have been reversed. This is a clip of part of the dance routine. We had a lot of clips of the dance routine and we found that is was getting quite repetitive. So we decided to reverse the clip to see what it would look like an a=it added another element to it so it no longer just looked like any other the other dance clip we used it made it look like a different dance which makes that section more interesting.

These two images show how we were able to alter the colours of the clips by using a feature on iMovie. Using this tool meant that we were able to alter the colour to make it brighter or change the skin tones of some of the group so they didn't looked so washed out in the shot we could also make the backgrounds darker or brighter depending or what we wanted in that particular clip I believe using this tool was very vital and mad a massive different to our shots and they way we used the tool defiantly had a massive impact on our video.

These pictures show how we were able to over lap clips and we were able to use two different clips and put them side by side. To put two images together we used the side by side tool. However in our case we wanted to use the same clip side by side so we just inserted the same clip twice we also wanted both of her hands facing inwards so we flipped on of the clips. One problem we faced when used this tool was we had changed the colours of one of the clips so we needed to try and get the other clip the exact same colour and this took some time as we needed to make sure it was perfect. We also used the cutaway tool as shown on the image in the top right this meant we could layer clips and have them fade in and out over the top of each other we used this tool several times throughout our music video as we found it very effective however when using this tool we had to also alter the opacity for example if we used a close up of a group member over a dancing clip we needed to make sure the dancing clip opacity was low otherwise it was difficult to see the close up which was more important.
This is the list of different effects that we had on iMovie we used quite a few of these such as flipped, hard light, day into night, glow and heat wave we found that these were the most effective and most appropriate for our genre of music video. We found that some of these effects look different depending on what clip we used them on so they weren't appropriate all the time. As you can see in the image above we have used day into night this made the back ground darker which let the dancing layer show more but still kept the individual in the mid shot visible and the focus of the shot. We also used the effective Glow a lot as this made the setting and the individual lighter and made it stand out a lot more as sometimes the artificial lighting was too dark. We used the Hard Light effect mainly on the dancing with the using of the flashing lights as it made the lights very powerful and stand out a lot.

For each clip that we used we muted them as we did not have any dialogue and we imported a track that would play along with the clips.

When using some of our clips we wanted to crop some of them to get rid of the background as sometimes as we only had a low budget we couldn't get a professional space so we need it to look professional by cropping out the backgrounds we also used it to make the image look closer then it was. Another time we used it was in a dancing shot which was of the whole group we changed it into a three person shot by cropping a few other people out this made the shot look completely different. We used two different types of cropping setting one called crop to fit which was good if it was a shot that didn't move around to much and the other one was Ken burns which showed where the clip started and finished which you could use to make sure you didn't crop any of the main picture out.

This picture shows that we split a clip which meant that we could put clips in-between the clip but then it would carry on from where it left off this was useful to make quick cute and to help the video flow.

This final image how's the amount of different sizes clips that we used some were fast to fit with the fast pace beat of the song and some others were longer for example ones that over lapped several clips and ones that were close ups of individuals singing. the amount of different size clips makes the video more interesting to watch.

Overall I believe that the editing process was very successful me and Georgina worked very well as a team and we were able to negotiate and listen to others different ideas and were very accepting of each other. I have also learnt alto more about how to edit a music video and learnt about more tools to make the process more effective.
