The Pharcyde 'Drop' Fat Boy Slim 'Praise You'

What is it about these videos that attracts our attention.

The Pharcyde 'Drop'

This video attracts my attention because they have used a natural street setting which I think is interesting because it shows the type of place they live and the type of place they are trying to represent in the song. It also attracts my attention because they have edited the video so it appears as if it is going in an reverse order which is very interesting to watch and also makes you wonder what it looked like before if it went in the normal order so I think this editing technique also helps the viewer to think about what they are watching more.

From this video for my own video i think that could use the editing technique of it going backwards as I think that this is quite an affective technique however I do not think that I would use it the whole way through my video as I think this is maybe a bit to much. From this video I think I would make the lighting lighter as this would sit my genre better however I think the dark lighting suits the hip hop genre very well which is what they are trying to portray.

Fat Boy Slim 'Praise You'

This video attracts my attention because it is unlike any other video that I have seen. For example it uses handheld camera through out the whole of the video. It is also set in a completely natural setting and it was not staged at all for example the people who are watching the dancers did not know that this was being recorded so their reactions are completely raw. This also attracts my attention because I really like videos were they uses dancers in them in this instance that have used a flash mob type situation where that just start dancers in the middle of a crowd in a public place which I feel is very effective.

From this video from my own video i would not use natural lighting throughout the whole of the video as I think that it makes the quality of the camera look very poor. I would also not just use handheld camera I would also use more of a variety of shots as I think that this would make the video more interesting.

Why do music videos need interesting ideas?

I think that music videos need interesting ideas because they need something that is different to any other artist which is going to make them unique as an artist so when the audience watches the video they will know straight away who that artists is. I also think that they need to be interesting so the audience are willing to watch them over and over again because this jus the whole point of a music video it is needs to share the image of what the artist was thinking when they recorded the song. The video is also a way of the fans to connect with the artist and feel part of there world which will help the artist to seek more albums.

Why do they need to stand out?

I think that an artists music video needs to stand out because the more it stands out the more people are likely to watch it and share it around this means they are likely to get more views which can lead to them gaining more fans. When videos stand out it is usually because they have done something that the audience would never think of doing or what be too afraid to do. |I think this is one of the reasons that the Fat Boy Slim video is so effective because usually people would be too embarrassed to dance in a public place in front of people so they are able to watch the people in the video do it instead.

test shots

This is some test shots of some of the possible dancers/actors that we are thinking about having in our music video. We searched for these people by looking at their dancing on social media which they have posted and also looking at their images that they have to make sure that they have the same style to fit with the genre of our music video. We will still have them audition to make sure that they are exactly what we are looking for. We also still need to have them audition for the lip syncing parts.

Final logo design

This is the final font that we decided. We think that this fonts looks very professional, it is clear to read and is also not to bold or overwhelming.

This is our final logo for our record label. We change the font from above into white placed this in the centre. We used the same circle from our other trials however we decided to get ride of all the fade however we kept the light effect and made it brighter. I think this logo looks very professional and is conventional due to it being very simple as most record label company logos are. We could have added a picture like some other record label logos have used how ever we thought that this was not necessary and used the light effect instead.

This is our logo on The back of the draft of our dig pack to show how it will look and see if it is still readable and if it still looks effective. I think it does and I also like how the colour of logo stands out and the lighting effect gives it a bit of different colour which will link in with the bright colour theme of the artist and album cover.

Design of Logo process

This is a selection of the different fonts that we looked at and were considering. How we rejected these because we thought these were all to overwhelming for we wanted on our logo as these are quite bold fonts. We rejected to bottom two because we didn't like the bubbles surrounding the text and also didn't like how they were not straight and were on a jagged line. When looking at fonts instead of just looking on word or powerpoint for inspiration we decided to search some font websites and this is where we found these. These Fonts were from a website called DaFont. We wanted our logo to portray a professional image of what our company would be like and i think the more professional a logo looks the more serious the public and other people in the industry will take the record label. This is why we wanted a quite simple text as this looks the most professional in our opinion.

This are the Design of logos that we rejected. We didn't like the use of the bright colours as we thought this did not look as professional as the ones which were used black and white. We also didn't like the fade effect that we  have used in some of them as we do not think that it stands out and with the black font it made it look unprofessional. However we did really like the use of the circle which also stood out to use when doing out record company logo research. Out of this selection my favourite was the one in the top right hand corner.

Continuing on from the circle idea we decided to create a different background for it which we could then add text to the top of. We kept some fade but not as much as before which means the black now stands out a lot more. We also added a light effect which we believe suits our logo, record company and the type of artists that we would want to produce. We also changed the font to white instead of black on a white background on a black circle. However we are still not have with the font and also we want to reduce the fade even more.

logo for our record label

We looked at several different logos for inspiration when thinking about how to design our own logo. when looking at this logos there were certain logos that stood out to us as a group for example we really like the Handcooked records label as there was a block of colour with white writing which really stood out to us. We also liked the font from island because it was bold and clear this is an important thing because the clearer that it is the more that a person will be able to read it which means they are more likely to remember it and if they like the music they have brought they are more likely to go back to that record label again for song choices as they will sell the type of music that the audience likes. Finally we liked the Diamond and raw Record label logo because it uses an interesting picture in its logo which its different to the rest as it looks 3D which makes it stand out compared to the other labels that we looked at.

This is the Island record label logo. I like this logo because I like how the text stands out and also how they have used an image that represents that name of their record label. However I do not like this logo because I think the picture and the logo are in disproportionate sizes with each other which makes the logo look unbalanced.
This is Colombia records logo I don't like this label because I feel like is docent all connect as the image is too separate from the actual text and which could make it look like two separate things. However I do like this logo because I think that the image is different which makes it interesting and attracts the views eye and they are more likely to remember the symbol even if they do not remember the name.
This is Diamond and Raw record label logo. I like this logo because it all looks like one whole image with the writing and picture inside a circle. I also like the image inside of the Circle this is because it looks 3d which makes it stand out. However I do not like the text in this logo because I do not feel like is bold enough which means that it doesn't stand out as much.

This is Handcooked Records logo. I like this logo because they have used colour for there background which helps it stand out a the majority of them are black and white. However what would make this stand out more would be it the text and the image were pure white because the cream makes it look quite dull.
This is republic records logo. I like this logo because they have used the same image twice but they have just edited it slightly to make the colour lighter on one side then the other. I also like this record labels logo because the image that they have used represents what record labels are about and that is creating music.

This is Pinwheel Records logo. I like this logo because it says  the name of where they were created. I think this is a good idea because this is a way for the audience to connection to the record label if they have a special connection to this place or not which may meant they are more likely to look at the record label which will connect them to the artists.

This Vibetown Records logo. I like this logo because I like how they have used to circle to connect it all like  Diamond and Raw logo. I also like how they have kept it quite simple and it looks extremely professional. However in some ways I do think that it may be useful if they did have an image included in there logo because this helps the viewer to remember the record label.
This is Infinite records logo. I like this logo because the text is bold which helps it stand out and I also think the image is relevant and very creative. However i do not like this logo because I think the image is two small and if it was bigger it would help it standout more.
This is Urban records logo. I like this logo because they have used a large image which is very creative and uses the first letters of the companies name in the image which makes it more memorable. I also like he style of text they have used and the size of the font that they have used.

Here are some of the record labels that produce the same genre of music that we are thinking of recreating:

Fifth Harmony Biography

Fifth Harmony was first created on the second season of The X Factor USA they first auditioned as solo artists and then was put together as a group by Simon Cowell . In 2014 they went on the tour with Demi Lovato as her supporting act. later on that year they headlined there own tour. They won the Artist to watch MTV awards. During all of this they had Barbie dolls that were made to look like them. Once they had finished there tour they started to record there own full length album with the record label Epic record there first single was 'Bo$$' followed by there second single 'sledgehammer'.
They say that there style is a 'fuse of harmonies with and edgy hybrid of R&B, hip hop and electric pop.'
fifth harmony says that their mission as a group is "Nowadays so many girls are really harsh online and always bringing each other down, so one of the things we try to do is help bring them back together'
This group is very unique as they all have different backgrounds and come from different places and also have different musical experience which means each person brings something unique to the group and gives them a different edge to other groups who may be similar to them.

Target audience

Here a collage of who we think are target audience is and there style. We think that our target audience will be between the ages of 13-20 and they will mainly be girls. We think this because girl groups mainly attract female fans and these fans can relate to them and there are a type of 'role model' for their fans. It is very impotent to find the right target audience to make sure that the songs they release and their music videos are appropriate to the age range and gender to make sure that it appeals to them so they keep listening to the artists. It is also important when creating a music video to make sure that the video is appropriate to the target audience and that they will enjoy it this means that they will not stop watching or change what they think about the group. I think our target audience is the right size because it means that we can include something in our video for everyone however if the target audience is to big the video may include things they don't appeal to everyone and some people may get bored.

song choice

Georgina and I decided to make a Prezi to explore different song choices and the things we liked and disliked about them.

We decided to look at artist such as Fifth Harmony, Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus, Little Mix, Taylor Swift and Beyonce.

We also researched into other artists such as The Saturdays, Rhianna, Katy Perry and Britney Spears but we didn't really think these options suited what genre and style we wanted to go for.

We have decided to go for the dance/pop genre because we really wanted to do an upbeat fun video. We also thought that this was the best way to show off our skills and talents to the best of our ability.

character mood board

After researching the genre of our song we decided to look at the characters that we would want ion our music video. Since our song was originally sung by a group we will need to have 5 characters in our video and we want to make sure that each one of these characters has different styles and are individuals as well as a group so in some shots to show they are a group we could have them all wearing the same things just in slightly different ways. we researched into the original group who sang the song that we are using to see what types of characters they had and also how they linked their styles together to make sure that they still looked like a group. This gave us a lot of inspiration of how to represent each individual character in our video.

We also looked into other artist which we could use for inspiration in our much this has really helped us get as many ideas as possible:

We have noticed that the characters that we represent in this music video is very important because this is one thing that helps to attract a fan base and also a way that the fans can identify with the characters and the group as a whole and helps them stay connected which will hopefully lead to future sales of the group.

genre mood board

We decided to create a mood board of other artist that were in the same genre as the artist that we have chosen this helped us to get more inspiration if what different artists have done and how they also represent them selves and brand them selves which is also very important. When looking at these different artist we found that they all use quite bright happy light colours but also use a lot of black and white as there branding colours to keep it quite simple this could because they want to try and reach out to a widespread audience. There clothing is quite revealing and very feminine but some different artist have hints of masculinity in there clothing such as wearing trainers or masculine colours this can be a way of making the artist unique. Most of them also wear quite a lot of make up. when thinking about how to represent our artists we will consider all of this very carefully and make sure that our mise en scene stays in this genre.

Song Permission

Before Georgina and I could use the song we needed to ask for permission to make sure we was not breaking any copyright laws.

Song choice research

When looking at what song we wanted to use we made sure that we choose very carefully because we need to make sure that we choose a song that we could be very creative with and not run out of ideas to put into our video. We had decided as a group that we defiantly wanted to use a up beat song where we could use lots of dancers. When choosing our song because we knew that we wanted to have dancers this meant that we needed to have a choreographer so when choosing a song we need to have a discussion with our chosen choreographer that they would be able to create an interesting dance piece to a song. So the song choice was a decision between me and Georgina but also our choreographer.

Some of the songs that we looked at were:
Bo$$- fifth Harmony
Die young- Ke$ha
We R who we R- Kes$ha
Salute- Little Mix
We listened to several different Britney Spears songs such as Circus and many more of her up beat songs as she has quite a few.
We also looked at several different Miley Cyrus songs such as Bangerz and many more of her new and old songs but we found that her music was not what we had in mind.
We found that a lot of these songs didn't match the type of vibe that we wanted and therefore we not appropriate we also.

Our chosen song is  Bo$$ by Fifth Harmony this is because it is an up beat song and is an easy song to choreograph a good interesting dance to which is an essential part of our video as this is the main concept. It is also very light and not about a heavy subject and a good feel song which is what we wanted to go for.

We R Who We R- Ke$ha

When listening to this song we decided that this song had too many vocals and too many words in it that may ruin our video as they are quite fast and our actor in the video may not no them or it may look messy and might be out of time. We also decide that we thought that this song was quite a dark dance video and we wanted one more 'good feel'.

Salute- Little Mix

We decided that we like this song better then we liked Ke$has song this is because we though it was a more feel good song and it would be easier to choreograph a dance to and we also felt we felt more inspiration wen listening to this song then we did she we listened to Ke$has song however there is still a lot of lyrics in this song which are very fast which will make it extremely difficult when we need to incorporate the lip syncing.

Decision blog

I have decided to work in a group with Georgina Welton. This is because we both want to do a up beat dance music video and have similar interests. We both have the similar taste in music and when we discussed our individual ideas about what we wanted to put into the video we saw that they were quite similar and decided to merge our ideas together and build on them. We both wanted to use dancers in our music videos and have lots of bright colours with lots of quick cuts.
